IP Address Questions and AnswersCategory: IP QuestionsConnecting mac and pc to wireless network

I just got a mac and am trying to tie it into an existing wireless network. I am trying to find the IP address and don't seem to be able to find the right one for either machine. I get the same for both from

I have a UVerse gateway, 2 Wire Gateway 3800 HGV-B. I am running windows XP on the pc. I know very little about apple and the mac. I have a wireless printer on the network and the mac can see that. I am trying the smb://IPAddress command and it is not working. I do not seem to be able to find the correct IP address for the pc. From this forum I see that I am getting the gateway IP address. On the pc ipconfig returns

Windows IP configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State: Media disconnected
Ethernet adapter Wireless Connection:
Connection-Specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway:

Both the mac and the pc get the ip address back from

pc has a linksys AE1200 USB wireless adapter

When I do ipconfig/all I also get for the wireless network connection:
physical addressC0-C1-C)-5D-05-35
DHCP Enabled = Yes
autoconfiguration Enabled - Yes

I previously had a wired network setup with the current pc and this pc. I have disabled that network.

Can you please tell me how I can get the pc and mac to see each other on the wireless network.

Thanks, Len

Hi Len,

Going from PC to Mac can be very frustrating in the beginning. I've experienced it, but stuck it out and now I love Mac's.....although I'm still forced to use a Windows PC daily, I do use my Mac for photo/video projects and it's leaps and bounds above Windows.

With that being said, both PC's will show the same IP address when going to WIMI as both are behind the same connection. Internally though, they'll both show different IP's like the 192.168.x.x IP you've shown below for the PC.

To get PC's and Mac's to see each other on the network has been hit and miss for me. So, I've been using and it's solved all of my issues. I can access those same files from my iPhone, iPad, and any PC with internet. It's really much easier and makes more sense in my situation.

If you've got a different situation where dropbox won't be your best option, let me know and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for your help Brian. I'll try the dropbox.
