Why does my IP location put me in the wrong major city.

Daniel Barch asked 2 years ago

Why is it that your site keeps saying I am in Phoenix, Arizona, while other sites have my IP location as where I actually live. Other sites with IP lookup seem to know what city and state I live in. This seems to be a problem with an ad I am running on my website that uses said info to "localize" some of the text in it for me.
Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your question Daniel Barch.

IP Address lookups are never very specific as to location.

I looked your IP up on 4 different sites. 2 said Phoenix, one said Las Vegas and the fourth one listed 3 possible locations, Las Vegas, Henderson NV. and Phoenix.

Doing a straight ARIN database lookup it shows COX as the ISP and shows that they are based out of Georgia. It also shows a reverse DNS entry of ip7X-18X-2XX-XXX.lv.lv.cox.net which would essentially confirm it being Las Vegas. I put X's in the DNS entry to protect your true IP.

Every site that has an IP lookup script does it differently. Sometimes the simplest script is the most accurate.
