Tracing an email from gmail.

raramat asked 2 years ago

Wondering if you are able to trace an email sent from gmail to hotmail? If asked, would someone at Google search on something like tracing someone's received email for them? I received this below from someone I sent a message to (at a hotmail address) through a now closed gmail account and wondering if it's actually possible? I thought not. It wasn't a bad message, just funny and mildly insulting:rolleyes: but she's obviously not impressed.

"Currently, there is an individual who is working on identifying where the email was created and I have informed Google about the abuse of their system. Something they look upon with great disapproval."

Through a normal search, a gmail email will only trace back to a gmail server in most cases. Hotmail is essentially the same unless the sender is using an email client such as Outlook Express or Thunderbird. Then the originating IP might be contained in the email header.

If someone reports another person to google, they will probably not take any action unless there are multiple complaints for different users.
