static external ip question

Noyb Raeally asked 2 years ago

hi,

On my home network (ATT DSL) I was just given a Motorolla Netopia 3347-02 combo modem/router. I use port forwarding to connect externally back to one computer at home. Is there a way to prevent this netopia from getting assigned a new IP address every time there is a configuration change made to it that requires a reboot? Is the purchase of an external static IP from ATT the only way to avid this, or is there some configuration within the 3347 to prevent this behavior? I thought there was a way to reserve the IP for a period of time where a reboot would grab the same one, but I also used to drink a lot.....

Also, if no workaround, would connecting via a VPN avoid this issue of ever changing IP addy's? If so, are VPN very difficult to set up and configure?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet would be to purchase a static IP from AT&T. It'll probably only cost you like $5 a month and save you a lot of hassle.
