Same IP through cable router

g30hd3 asked 2 years ago

Hello to all members!

I've been using whatismyip for quite some time now and it has never failed me. Recently I've switched over to Comcast HS Cable internet service (20mbps dynamic) and this annoyance started showing up. No matter what device I use to log onto whatismyip.com it would show the same exact IP (for example; 68.180.15.177). I've tried many online games that is connectable over IP, which all have failed to connect, so I can safely rule out that the IP is not of my of my NIC. Please help?

PS: I'm looked up on a netgear wireless/wired router.

Going from memory here, I'm not sure that IP is going to work. At least, not the way that games use IP.

I haven't done a PC game in a long time, and have enjoyed my XBox360 since it was released to market. But I recall my PC copy of Half-Life had an IP option *and* an Internet option. The IP option never worked through routers, as I recall. This was not a problem in the game; it was designed that way. If you wanted to play HL over the Internet, you had to use the "Steam" online service setup by Valve Software.

Either your game software is setup this way, or you may need to configure port forwarding on your broadband router. Obviously, though, you'd need to find out what ports the game is using.
