Question with Linksys wireless router

devinkaylin asked 2 years ago

I am trying to change my IP. I've tried the various methods..but can't seem to do it. I have Cox Cable for my ISP. I called them, and they said to unplug the modem for 24 hours. Here's the weird thing. When I connected my PC directly to my cable modem, the IP is different. However, when I reconnect through my Linksys wireless router (I also have a laptop), my IP goes back to the same one that doesn't change.

They are assigning you an IP based off of the MAC address of your hardware devices. Your modem's MAC is different than your PC's mac.

So, when you plug your modem back in, Cox recognizes the MAC and reassigns the same IP because it's still within its lease time.

This is why people "spoof" the MAC address, there is a lot of discussion about that in other threads of this forum. Maybe google your equipment make/model and "MAC spoof" to find some more specific help.
