Question about static IP

HoboAddiction asked 2 years ago

Ok so my friends connect to my server that I run for a game, and every time I start the server I have to check my ip using this website, and then give it to my friends so they can get on. How do I make it so they always connect using 1 ip? Sorry if this doesn't make sense/isn't possible etc. I just don't know much about networking. I thought that if I gave myself a static IP, the one that I see on this website would stay the same, but it doesn't

Thanks for your question HoboAddiction.

The only IP you can "give yourself" would be your internal IP. That does not have any effect at all on your external IP which is the one you see on https://www.whatismyip.com. To get a static external IP would require it being established by your ISP which of course they will charge you extra for.
You can use a a DNS service that will track your IP and make the changes for you through their service making the server available as though it has a static IP. They do this by assigning you a domain name to use instead of an IP. They track your IP through a software that is installed on your machine. When the IP changes, they redirect the domain name to the new IP within a few minutes.
Some are free, some are not. You can find them by searching for "Dynamic DNS Services" in your favorite search engine.
