PVN And a Local IP

Dear Users, I will like to know if someone one is using PVN on laptop, and can someone locate where these person live's? and can you be tracked even from the inter pool? Hope to hear from you.

Thanks for your question bawinger.

I will guess that you mean VPN not PVN. A VPN is a Virtual Private Network connection meaning a private tunnel from one computer or location to another location. The IP address of the connected computer should be able to be discovered from the location that they are connected to.

As far as determining exactly where the individual lives, that would be a task for a legal professional. If the person connecting is connecting from home, the ISP can be discovered and the identity of the individual also discovered but it will require a subpoena through the legal system.

A VPN usually reassigns the gateway of the computer connecting to the distant network but this is not always the case. OpenVPN now makes a virtual connection but maintains the computers original gateway so only the traffic intended for the distant network is channeled through the VPN tunnel. The normal internet traffic is still routed through their local gateway. This would make tracking them a little harder but it can still be accomplished given enough motivation.
