prob with opening winrar files

terry boarts asked 2 years ago

Hi.
I downloaded a winrar file from a P2P webs site after opening it found 25 more winrar files. I cannot open files to access their content . The first volume when trying to open, asks for the next volume from a disc. I put all the files on a disc but get the same problem. Can anyone help ??? please.

It would be helpful to know more about the file you are trying to decompress.

It's possible that the file is corrupt or possibly some kind of malware considering it's from a P2P site.

I always and only use 7zip for file compression and decompression on Windows machines and have never had an issue. It might be worth a try. After installing it, navigate to the file in Windows Explorer and right click on it, tell 7zip to "extract here". See what happens. I haven't found a compression extension yet that it cant open except the proprietary cab files in some software programs.

I have a feeling there's an executable of some sort either missing or somewhere further down the list inside that main RAR file. You need to extract the first level, then probably run that executable, whatever/wherever it is.

Assuming, as Schnerdly pointed out, it's not infected, corrupted, or deliberately malicious.
