Network newbie here, just know enough to be dangerous.
Seeking to add a network printer and not sure if I need a hub or a switch...
Currently have internet coming in and network cables are connected to the router, by way of a device that is an intermediary for all the cables to the network jacks and the router.
All LAN jacks on the router are connected with cables for each of the four network outlets.
I'd like to add my network capatible printer, but not clear if I need a hub or switch.
Thanks for your question Badger51.
There is a very distinct difference between an Hub and a Network Switch.
A Hub is called half-duplex meaning it can send data and then receive the response but can't do both at the same time.
A Network Switch is called full-duplex meaning it can send and receive data at the same time which makes it about 5 times faster then a Hub of the same speed.
To add the printer, I would use a switch for the improved performance. It will also perform better with any additional devices you add later.
