my small network needs a 5th port,
I have a linksys wrt54g with dmz set on port 3 for a security dvr. there are 3 computers on the other ports. 1 sharing a printer. I need 1 or 2 more wired ports,I have tried to add a linksys befsr41 or nr041 routers to the mix with no success. the older nr041 has an uplink button for port 1 when I use this config
I can't share the printer ,and can only browse the network on the nr041 router. its been a while since I posted here ,brain are you still here. thanks,
Best option would be to add a switch or a hub. Switches are smarter than hubs. And usually any port on a switch is an uplink port.
So when you get a switch, just connect it to any port on the router...besides port 3, then you can connect all computers to the switch....if you got an 8-port.
Brian has already given you the answer. Remember, a key function of a router is to provide separation between networks. So there is certain network traffic that refuses to pass through a router if you use the uplink port on that router.
As Brian said, you want a switch or a hub (preferably a switch anymore, because the cost difference is virtually nil). Not a router.
