How is it possible that while running HotSpot Shield the WhatIsMyIP service shows my real IP? Not Hotspot Shield's IP. Am I fooling myself thinking that by running Hotspot Shield I am protected whereas in really everyone knows my IP?
Thanks for your question Mokita.
HotSpot Shield is a VPN type software. There are two ways a VPN can be configure. One way send all of your TCP/IP traffic through the VPN. The other only send selective traffic through the VPN. I don't use such software but I would expect HotSpot Shield to tunnel all traffic through the VPN meaning we should only see their IP address. If it's not doing that, it may not be configured correctly.
FYI: As a person that spends much of every day on the Internet, I am very up to date with Internet Security. On my own computer, an important part of that security is a hosts file. That prevents my computer from accessing things that are known to be dangerous. Because no one person can know and do all regarding security, I am left to rely on other people to catalog and maintain lists of the dangerous places on the Internet. One of those sources is winhelp2002.mvps.org. For some reason, they have included hotspotshield.com as a probable threat. As a result I am unwilling to access their site to see how their software is configured.
