I am confused

hmmnd asked 2 years ago

Hi each

I have been reading a lot about IP addresses but one thing is confusing me.

My laptops and pc,s are all given IP like 192.186.1.4, 192.186.1.2 etc with the router being 192.186.1.1 ....well as far as I can tell.

On a forum I use my IP is shown as 79.70.77.99 and when I google for 'what is my ip address' I get a site which tells me my IP is 79.70.04.211.

Does this mean both my internal IP and my externa IP is not fixed and change all the time each time I log in a PC or restart the router.

yours confused
any help in understanding this much appreciated

Thanks for your question hmmnd.

The internal IP addresses are only used inside your home or place of business and are duplicated world wide by millions of people.

The external IP address is the address your router gets from your ISP. This address is unique but a lot of ISP's rotate the IP addresses they assign people to add security for their users but in reality I think it's just to prevent subscribers from running any kind of server from their home. The IP's you quoted above are consistent with the subnet allotted to your ISP.
