If the domain is example.com, the actual address may be
or some such. What is the procedure for learning this address for any given domain name that I don't own or control? I know how to find just the IP address using PING but that's not good enough.

What your asking is how to learn the true directory structure of the server that is hosting the website.
Most, if not all, webmasters go well out of their way to protect that information.
I don't believe there is a reliable method of learning the root path to the webserver files.
