How IP addresses work?

elliottlock asked 2 years ago

Hi,

I've read the Internet VS Local IP post but i'm still confused.

If I have my internet IP of lets say:

212.167.x.x

And 3 local machines and a router on:

192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3
192.168.0.4

Then if i'm on another machine on the internet how do I ping a particular one of those machines? If I ping 212.167.19.32. Then I'm not contacting the particular machine I want to contact.

Cheers,

EL

Yes...pinging the 212.167.x.x will only get to your router and not an individual machine with a 192.x.x.x address.
