How do I know if a moderator/admin on a forum can recognise me?

coldmountain asked 2 years ago

Ok,I checked my IP address on a general IP checker site online. It would seem to be dynamic in that it changes when I switch off my router.

However to double check I asked an admin person from a forum I visit it, they said that I look the same to them (IP wise), it hasn't changed

I would very much rather my IP address was dynamic for security purposes, especially on forums.

Could someone advise? I don't know what the deal is

Thanks for your question coldmountain.

If your on a cable modem, it will change IP's each time the first device connected to the modem by ethernet is changed. The same often holds true for DSL modems but not always.

Changing your IP address does not really improve security. It can add a small amount of anonymity but that doesn't translate to security. Regardless of how you go about changing your IP address, your physical address is still known to your ISP but only to them. There is no lookup to cross an IP address to a physical address. The closest they can get is the town you live in and they can get that anyway. If you do something expressly illegal, the legal authorities can get your address from your ISP by way of a warrant so there is no such thing as anonymity on the internet.

Your IP is dynamic but that doesn't mean it will change every time you access the internet or every time you boot your computer. The only way I am aware of to get a new IP every time you connect would be through a dialup ISP.
