Thanks for your question AloneOne.

You can trace the general origin of an IP address by using our IP tools here. Use the "IP Address Lookup" to see the general location of an IP Address and who owns it such as an ISP or a private company.

Do a "whois" search in your favorite search engine to see who owns a domain name and discover it's IP Address. Sometimes the true owners identity is masked.

You can also accomplish both of the above by using a tool such as IPNetInfo from NirSoft.

As far as the true originating IP of an email, some have it in the email header and some don't. If it's present in the header, it is often called the x-originating IP.

If you're talking about locating someone's IP who is posting to a forum like this, or a social site like LinkedIn, the short answer is that you can't.

A user's IP address while accessing a site is generally considered private information. And we agree. That's why we will edit posts to mask the IP when a user posts a question about that IP.

Having said that, you mention email, too. Email has to be routed from source to destination, and it uses the message header to do that. So all IP's that "touched" the email message are in the header.

But with some Web-based email services (Hotmail is one, I think) the user's IP never actually touches the email, so it's not included in those headers. So, unfortunately, the answer varies.
