Dynamic IP ISP > Static IP Config on Router

TuesdayCoffee asked 2 years ago

Hello. I was considering using a different DNS than the one my ISP provided, and I intend to apply it to the router settings. So I was wondering, if my ISP has me on Dynamic IP, would it be possible to switch my router from DHCP to Static without any hitches? Do I even need static IP to change DNS? I hope someone can help me out on this.

Thanks for your question TuesdayCoffee.

It sometimes depends on the specific router but most will allow you to set DNS entries with a dynamic IP.

As far as setting your router to a static IP, most ISP's will deny the connection from residential service customers if they are not using DHCP services from one of the ISP's servers so the common answers would be, no you can not set your router to a static IP.
