All, I am using WCG200 ver.2 linksys wirless router to connect to the internet via the cable company. the problem I am running into is that I don't believe my ISP is static ip address, but no matter what I did to renew my IP address, I keep getting the same IP address, anything I am missing here?
Maybe not. ISP's use a service called DHCP to dynamically assign IP addresses. DHCP includes a setting called TTL (Time To Live). It basically is the time before an IP address is put back into the pool to be reissued.
If your PC signs on between the time when what's called the "lease" on that IP expires and when TTL is complete, then DHCP reassigns that IP address right back to you. This is one of the reasons that IP addresses tend not to change with broadband connections.
It's also possible that the cable modem is the one setting the IP Address. Sometimes, you can reset that by turning off your router, then turning off the modem (actually pull the plug, even if both devices have a power switch). Then turn on the cable modem, wait two or three minutes for it to fully connect, then connect your router. You might see a change then.
